Chapter 9 - Aidan

HE HADN’T SLEPT THIS WELL in years. Aidan woke slowly, the warmth and weight beside him a happy reminder of how his night had gone. He stretched languidly, letting his senses pick up the littlest whispers of her soft breathing, the air moving against his shoulder and neck from the pillow beside him, and finally he turned to look at her.

Olivia looked peaceful sleeping on her stomach, one hand tucked under her chin, with none of her worries or questions hovering. Her hair was spread across her back and the pillows, a carpet of lush red that was staggering in how gorgeous it looked with the morning light settling into the waves. He took his time observing her while he had the opportunity; her slender eyebrows were a truer brown than the rest of her hair, while her eyelashes were definitely red. There were only hints of laugh and worry lines on her pale skin while she was relaxed, but it gave her character. She hadn’t liked him spending a little money on her so she could have a weekend to avoid thinking about the mess of her life in Portland, so how would she accept the idea that they were bound together; that he would gladly give her everything she had ever wanted? That everything he had was hers for the asking? Independence seemed to be important to her, even to the point of stubborn pride, but she had confessed some of her childhood to him the night before—he understood. His family hadn’t fallen apart the way hers had, but he was just as isolated from them, albeit by choice.

Aidan propped himself up on an elbow, pillowing his cheek on his fist so he could watch her. That she was relaxed eased his mind. While she was at peace, he could already tell his own emotions would mirror that. There was an underlying peace in his soul that came straight from her.

Idly, he wondered if he would always know how she was feeling, through their mate bond somehow. He’d been attuned to her terror while
